Relax. Your Teeth Will Thank You.

Sherman Oaks cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Most Sherman Oaks adults have been warned about the physical effects of stress. Our doctors remind us to protect ourselves from the dangers of un-managed stress by eating healthy, exercising regularly, and getting adequate sleep.

We know that we shouldn’t try to relieve stress with overeating, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, or compulsive spending. (Even though many of us are guilty!)

Stress that is not sensibly managed can affect the heart, nervous system, immune system, and digestive system. It can also affect – you guessed it – your teeth.

The obvious risks to oral health are teeth grinding, jaw clenching, smoking, and the over-consumption of sugary foods. But did you know that stress can increase plaque production, trigger canker sores and increase the risk of periodontal disease? Another problem is that when people are under excessive stress, they often neglect basic oral hygiene.

If you’re concerned about the effect stress can have on your teeth, schedule an appointment with Michael Bjornbak at Sherman Oaks Dental – Michael Bjornbak, DDS today. We offer a broad scope of preventative, restorative and cosmetic dental services including dental implants, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, and dentures.

It’s ironic, but for some Sherman Oaks residents, dental visits cause major anxiety. What if the thought of visiting a dentist sends your blood pressure through the roof? Talk to us about sedation dentistry.

Relax. We can help you get the dental treatment you need.

Do I Need A Dental Cleaning If I Brush And Floss At Home?

dental cleanings Sherman Oaks

Today’s post focuses on professional dental cleanings. You might wonder if you need a professional dental cleaning if you already practice dental hygiene daily at home.

The answer is that both processes are critical because they work in tandem to maintain oral health.

Dr. Michael Bjornbak encourages patients to practice preventative dentistry by:

Brushing
Flossing
Healthy diet – fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts
Regular dental cleanings
Regular checkups

Dental cleanings increase the effectiveness of your daily oral care by removing the plaque and tarter that can accumulate regardless of daily brushing and flossing. In fact, when plaque hardens, it can only be removed with the special tools used by a hygienist.

A hygienist will first use a vibrating ultrasonic tool to dislodge the largest pieces of tartar. This process may tickle a bit. The hygienist will then use tools with finer attachments to remove the smaller pieces of calculus. When all plaque and tartar is gone, polishing is the final step in the cleaning process.

The goal is to make your tooth surfaces as smooth as possible, to prohibit food particles from lodging in little spaces that are difficult to clean. If you are having an exam during the same visit, your technician may take dental x-rays. X-rays can reveal cavities while they are small and can be easily filled.

Let your hygienist know if your teeth are sensitive so he/she can make your cleaning as comfortable as possible. After the cleaning, a fluoride treatment may be given to help strengthen your teeth.

Before your hygienist leaves, you may want to ask if there are areas you can improve. Your hygienist can tell you which tooth surfaces had the most build-up. If the back teeth are presenting a problem, you can talk to Dr. Bjornbak about sealants.

If you have braces, you may want more frequent dental cleanings because food can easily lodge between the wires.

Call Sherman Oaks Dental – Michael Bjornbak, DDS at 818-465-9704 to schedule a professional cleaning today! Your smile will thank you.

Can You Name 9 Dental Specialties?

Sherman Oaks Pediatric and Cosmetic Dentistry

Most Sherman Oaks people probably know how a pediatric dentist differs from an orthodontist. Some Studio City CA dental patients may even know the unique focus of endodontists. But few California residents probably know that the American Dental Association recognizes nine dental specialties. Today’s post looks at the specific disciplines within the fascinating world of dentistry and the years in which they were formally recognized by the ADA. (If you want a challenge, see if you can name all nine before you continue reading this post.)

Endodontics (1983): This area focuses on “the morphology, physiology and pathology of the human dental pulp and periradicular tissues.”1 If you need a root canal in Sherman Oaks, you may require the services of an endodontist.

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (2003): If you want to straighten your teeth, you need an orthodontist. Dentofacial orthopedic specialists correct facial deformities using many of the same types of appliances used in teeth straightening therapy.

Pediatric Dentistry (1995): Sherman Oaks pediatric dentists provide dental care for infants, children and teenagers.

Periodontics (1992): “Periodontics is that specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes.”1 Periodontal specialists perform crown lengthening, pocket reduction, and soft tissue (gum) grafts.

Prosthodontics (2003): Prosthodontists provide restorative dental procedures including dental implants, crowns, bridges, and dentures. They also perform cosmetic dental treatments including porcelain veneers, crowns, dental bonding, invisible fillings, and teeth bleaching.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (1991): This specialty concerns “the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. It is a science that investigates the causes, processes, and effects of these diseases. The practice of oral pathology includes research and diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical, or other examinations.”1

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology
(2001): Oral and maxillofacial radiologists analyze radiographic images (x-rays) for issues of the maxillofacial area.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (1990): Oral surgeons perform surgery on the teeth, jaw, face, and gums. These include facial reconstruction, cleft lip and palate correction, bone grafting, dental implants, and impacted teeth.

Dental Public Health (1976): This discipline focuses on “preventing and controlling dental diseases and promoting dental health through organized community efforts.”1

General dentists and cosmetic dentists in the Sherman Oaks area are trained in a wide variety of dental procedures. However, sometimes your Sherman Oaks general dentist will refer you to a local Sherman Oaks specialist, or include a specialist as part of your treatment team.

Two Hints For When You’re Too Tired To Brush

Van Nuys gentle dentist

Too tired to touch a toothbrush. We’ve all been there.

Michael Bjornbak, DDS in Sherman Oaks is committed to helping patients throughout the Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys, and Studio City CA neighborhoods to maintain balanced hygiene and to correct imperfections that can lead to inhibited confidence and self-assurance.

On our blog today we are offering two fabulously bright ideas for overcoming exhaustion in favor of brushing and flossing late at night.

Idea #1 Drag Tongue Along Teeth
After a long thankless day as you are lying there in bed and realize you forgot to brush, drag your tongue over your teeth a few times while mentally reviewing how plaque and tartar form. Within 48 hours they can start the dirty work of eating away at the teeth. Then jump up and give your mouth just 2 minutes of gentle, thorough cleaning. It’s that uncomplicated.

Idea #2 Scrutinize the Food You Eat
Another convenient and manageable approach is to pay attention to what’s going into your mouth throughout the day. The higher the sugar content the sooner the teeth will need a brushing to avoid harm. Swish with water after coffee, tea or soda if brushing isn’t going to happen soon. Chewing sticky candy leaves debris all over in the mouth as does bread and crackers. Keep this in mind and commit to take care of the particles as soon as possible.

Shredded meat can remain lodged between teeth for days if you don’t pull it out with floss. Plan to floss or brush after eating if possible. With each particular type of food, learn to assess the effect it could have on your smile. Make the decision to brush before you are tired. By simply visualizing and committing, you reduce the likelihood of hemming and hawing later when you’re yawning and fading and have to choose between settling into bed and spending 2 minutes cleaning your teeth.

We know a long day of work or play can yield a worn out body. Likewise, we know consistent brushing will lessen buildup and help prevent decay and gum disease. And we know that sometimes cavities need filling, chipped teeth need fixing, crooked teeth need straightening, and wisdom teeth need extraction.

Some smile problems can be prevented and some just can’t. We are happy to help with teeth whitening, dental crowns, dental implants, dentures, or porcelain veneers. Come see our comfortable office at 4849 Van Nuys Blvd Ste 101 in Sherman Oaks, California 91403 and we’ll help with any dental problems we can.

Cosmetic dentistry enhances a smile in several ways – straightness, coloration, conformity, and natural feel. Cosmetic dentistry helps our valued patients talk clearly, smile freely, and eat comfortably. A consultation with Dr. Bjornbak can open your eyes to the unique possibilities for your beautiful smile. Contact us at 818-465-9704 for an appointment or visit our website http://www.shermanoaksdental.com/meet-dr-bjornbak/.

If we each do our part to keep your smile healthy and beautiful, then all of us can sleep at night.

Questions To Ask Your Sherman Oaks Dentist

Questions To Ask Your Sherman Oaks Dentist Sometimes Sherman Oaks residents research their mechanic or hairdresser more thoroughly than their dental professional. Shouldn’t your dental care be far more critical than the condition of your car or the style of your hair? At Sherman Oaks Dental, we love to answer questions about all facets of dentistry.

For instance, you may have questions about a dentist’s training and experience. Dr. Bjornbak has been performing complex dental procedures since 1987. If you have questions about the dental school Dr. Bjornbak attended, be sure to ask about it during your consultation.

You probably have questions about the types of procedures your dentist offers. These may include crowns, braces, fillings, dental bridges, root canals, dental bonding, white fillings, and gum contouring. These services may not be critical to you now, but it is a good idea to have an understanding of your options.

If you are contemplating smile restoration, tooth implants, or tooth whitening, discuss cosmetic dentistry services with your dentist. Look at before and after pictures and ask your dentist which procedures may be right for you.

At Sherman Oaks Dental, we offer the full menu of general and dental services including sedation dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and Invisalign. Furthermore, our dental hygienists perform the most thorough deep dental cleanings of any practice in California. If you haven’t run your tongue along smooth, tartar-free teeth in a while, come in for a dental cleaning. It’s a wonderful feeling!

We welcome questions about all aspects of Sherman Oaks Dental. Call us today at 818-465-9704 to have your questions answered.

No Dental Insurance? Prioritize Spending To Afford Dental Care

dental financing Sherman Oaks

Millions of Americans don’t have dental insurance, and many California employer plans have limited benefits. Some Sherman Oaks people who fail to get adequate dental care say “It’s too pricey.”

If you are really living below poverty level, this excuse may be valid – but if you have an average income, you can probably shift your priorities to find money in your budget to invest in a healthy smile.

You have probably heard of the “Latte Factor” which refers to the surprising amount of bucks that adds up if you buy a significant caffeinated beverage every morning. Even if you don’t drink coffee, you probably have a personal habit that costs a few dollars daily but adds up to hundreds of dollars a year. Soda pop, beer, an eight-dollar deli sandwich, a game of golf. How about personal grooming – manis, pedis, facials, and professional hair coloring. What about the income you spend for convenience – pizza delivery, ATM fees, heat-and-eat meals. How much do you spend on premium cable, video game rentals, full-price movies, and season tickets to Sherman Oaks sporting events?

If you have foregone dental exams, cleanings and treatments because you think it’s too costly, I hope this dental blog post has opened your eyes to purchases that may be far less essential than a healthy smile. Remember, if you ignore dental problems, eventually they will require more extensive treatments. Filling a cavity is relatively inexpensive, a root canal costs more, and a dental implant is a major investment. What is a tooth worth? Every single one is priceless. And don’t forget that dental troubles impact the well-being of your entire body.

Sherman Oaks Dental in Sherman Oaks provides competitively priced quality dental care including veneers, crowns, bonding, orthodontia, and teeth whitening. Ask us about dental financing options.

Suspect A Bite Problem?

malocclusion examination Sherman Oaks

Hello! I’m Michael Bjornbak, DDS, of Sherman Oaks Dental in Sherman Oaks. Thanks for visiting my dental blog. The topic of today’s post is malocclusion – literally – “bad bite”.

Edward Angle, a pioneer in modern orthodontics invented the term malocclusion. Malocclusion is fairly common in the population as a whole but, fortunately, in most cases the misalignment is so slight that it causes no problems.

When you combine multiple teeth on two arches and a jaw joint with a considerable range of motion, it is easy to see how these elements can fail to align properly. In fact, it is a wonder that they work correctly for most people – allowing them to talk, eat, and breathe without giving it a second thought.

There are many causes of malocclusion – some originating with the teeth and some originating with the jaw. Misshapen teeth, extracted teeth, impacted teeth, crowded teeth, and widely spaced teeth can influence the bite. Injury to the jaw can also cause malocclusion as well as improperly fitting restorations and other dental appliances.

Children with a normal bite can develop bite issues with prolonged pacifier use, thumb sucking or bottle drinking. In rarer cases, oral tumors can move a bite out of alignment.

The treatment for malocclusion depends on the cause. Orthodontics can move teeth into alignment to correct bite problems. Overcrowding often requires extraction of one or more teeth. Misshapen teeth that affect the bite can often be corrected with crowns or dental bonding.

If the jawbone is significantly misshapen or misaligned, maxillofacial surgery may be needed. Jaw surgery is a serious undertaking with significant risks and a long, painful recovery. While the jaw heals, it is secured with wires and screws. Ouch!

If your jaw hurts or you observe unusual wear to your teeth, it is essential that you are examined by a professional. Call 818-465-9704 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Bjornbak.

Our compassionate dental team has been serving patients at our comfortable Sherman Oaks office since 1987. We can give you more details about malocclusion, Invisalign invisible braces, teeth whitening, dental implants, or dentures.

Dr. Bjornbak also advises Sherman Oaks parents about important issues such as tooth development, thumb-sucking, water fluoridation, dental sealants, oral sports protection, and orthodontia. If you suspect that your child has any degree of malocclusion, schedule an exam ASAP. Untreated bite problems in <~URVChildren> can inhibit proper nutrition, breathing, tooth development, and speech development.

Let’s Work Together To Keep Your Smile Healthy And Beautiful

low cost tooth bleaching Sherman Oaks

Here at Sherman Oaks Dental we approach all your dental needs from two separate angles – what we can do in our office and what you can do at home. For example, tooth whitening and correcting discoloration can be treated in our office or at home. Here in the office there are safe and effective methods for lightening yellowed or stained tooth enamel. At-home whitening methods are also safe and effective and sometimes more affordable.

Additionally, we advise you regarding food and drink choices that can affect your whitened smile. Be aware of staining culprits such as coffee, tea, tobacco and harsh sodas. We understand that avoiding these items altogether is not an easy lifestyle change. Nor do we expect it.

Awareness and precaution can make a big difference. Rinsing your mouth out with water after drinking a dark or sugary drink can cut down on the contact your teeth have with such substances. Prolonged exposure to sugar can lead to buildup of plaque and tartar and prolonged exposure to staining substances can lead to stronger staining and discoloration.

If you are interested in making improvements to your smile and creating a more confident appearance for your professional career or personal relationships, please pick up the phone and contact the incredible staff at Sherman Oaks Dental today 818-465-9704. Dr. Michael Bjornbak, DDS, takes pride in providing compassionate care and expertise when treating patients.

Come discover the personal attention with teeth whitening, the patient and steady hand with dentures, the wise and thorough instruction relating to dental implants. Once you’ve scheduled a consultation, settle in for guidance that will make your daily oral care and lifestyle choices productive and meaningful.

When it comes to hygiene and healthy teeth we are a practice that wants to see you as little as possible. (It’s not that we don’t love you – we just want you to have a healthy smile!) If we only see you twice a year for regular checkups then we’ve done our job.

Dr. Bjornbak provides the full spectrum of dental services from sedation dentistry to cosmetic dentistry to Invisalign. And we welcome patients from all over the area, from Sherman Oaks to Sherman Oaks and from Van Nuys to Studio City CA.
