Bleeding Gums After Your 6-Month Cleaning?

bleeding gums Studio City CA

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are important for ideal dental health. However, some dental patients worry because their gums tend to bleed after a thorough cleaning.

Is this a problem? Well, it depends. If your gums bleed for a day or two after your cleaning, it isn’t really a problem. But, if the bleeding and tenderness lasts longer, you really need to return to your dentist and discuss the possibility of gum disease.

Gum disease ensues when plaque builds up along the gum line. You might also observe bad breath, painful chewing, and loose teeth.

Hi, I’m Dr. Michael Bjornbak of Sherman Oaks Dental – Michael Bjornbak, DDS in Sherman Oaks. Avoiding gum disease is just one of the many vital goals I have for my patients. Along with ideal dental health, I also seek to give my patients the beautiful smiles they desire through cosmetic dentistry.

Some effective procedures include porcelain veneers, dental crowns, dental bonding, teeth whitening, inlays/onlays, denture stabilization and tooth implants. If you want to correct several unattractive features in your smile, we can design a custom smile transformation that includes a combination of these services. It is not an exaggeration to say that modern cosmetic dentistry performed with know-how truly works miracles with your smile!

Our top services include:

7 Ways Bonding Can Beautify

Sherman Oaks Cosmetic Dentist

Dental bonding is a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure in the Sherman Oaks area, but there are many patients who don’t know exactly what it is. Today in the Sherman Oaks Dental dental blog, we explain 7 ways dental bonding is used in cosmetic dentistry.

The dental bonding procedure uses a resin material that is sturdy and tooth-colored. It is applied to the teeth while soft, like putty, and then hardened or set with a special light. The material bonds with the tooth and can then be shaped and polished.

Dentists will usually consider the option of bonding when 1) decayed, 2) chipped, or 3) cracked teeth need to be repaired.

4) Large spaces between teeth can be filled with bonding material, and 5) roots can be protected by bonding after gums recede.

6) Discolored teeth can also be improved using the bonding process, and, since the material is easily shaped, teeth can be made to 7) look longer or just have the general shape changed. Bonding is often used, along with teeth whitening as part of a total smile makeover.

Relax. Your Teeth Will Thank You.

Sherman Oaks cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Most Sherman Oaks adults have been warned about the physical effects of stress. Our doctors remind us to protect ourselves from the dangers of un-managed stress by eating healthy, exercising regularly, and getting adequate sleep.

We know that we shouldn’t try to relieve stress with overeating, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, or compulsive spending. (Even though many of us are guilty!)

Stress that is not sensibly managed can affect the heart, nervous system, immune system, and digestive system. It can also affect – you guessed it – your teeth.

The obvious risks to oral health are teeth grinding, jaw clenching, smoking, and the over-consumption of sugary foods. But did you know that stress can increase plaque production, trigger canker sores and increase the risk of periodontal disease? Another problem is that when people are under excessive stress, they often neglect basic oral hygiene.

If you’re concerned about the effect stress can have on your teeth, schedule an appointment with Michael Bjornbak at Sherman Oaks Dental – Michael Bjornbak, DDS today. We offer a broad scope of preventative, restorative and cosmetic dental services including dental implants, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, and dentures.

It’s ironic, but for some Sherman Oaks residents, dental visits cause major anxiety. What if the thought of visiting a dentist sends your blood pressure through the roof? Talk to us about sedation dentistry.

Relax. We can help you get the dental treatment you need.

Brush Up On Your Cavity Basics

Cavity Basics Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks Dental patients use the word “cavity” often when discussing oral health practices. Along with teeth whitening and other cosmetic dentistry procedures, cavities are a hot topic.

At Sherman Oaks Dental we think it’s great that people in the Sherman Oaks area are so conscious of their teeth, and we feel that having a better understanding of exactly what a cavity is will help them take better care of their pearly whites.

Cavities can also be called caries or tooth decay. When a tooth is permanently damaged in the hard surface, tiny openings occur. These little holes are cavities. Different factors that contribute to tooth decay are:

Frequent eating
Consuming sugary beverages
Oral bacteria
Insufficient tooth brushing and flossing

Cavities may get so bad that you will see pits or holes in your teeth, but symptoms may be more subtle, such as sensitivity, pain when biting, or a toothache. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should call your Van Nuys, Studio City CA, or Sherman Oaks dentist today for an appointment.

If you are in the market for quality dental care in the Sherman Oaks area, give Sherman Oaks Dental a call. We have been treating dental patients in and around Sherman Oaks since 1987. We can also answer any questions you have about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers and dental implants.

We hope to hear from you soon!

Sherman Oaks Wants Silver Screen Smiles

Sherman Oaks Wants Silver Screen Smiles

With the constant media coverage of celebrities, many Sherman Oaks dental patients are interested in having a smile like the stars. With an experienced dentist and the right smile makeover procedures, anyone can have a smile they want to show off.

Many smile makeovers include teeth whitening. There are a variety of ways this can be done. Most Van Nuys, Studio City CA, and Sherman Oaks drugstores sell over-the-counter whitening strips and gels. Your Sherman Oaks dentist can recommend an effective one, or he or she may offer in-office bleaching. This is a quick way to see whiter teeth in less than an hour.

For missing teeth, most Sherman Oaks cosmetic dentists will recommend a dental implant. Because a dental implant is anchored into the jawbone, it looks and feels just like a natural tooth. A dental implant prevents jawbone recession and the shifting of adjacent teeth.

Veneers are especially popular in the Sherman Oaks area. They cover the front of the teeth and are custom-made for each individual patient. These are useful for Sherman Oaks patients who have broken or chipped teeth, stained teeth, or gaps between teeth that they would like to hide.

Enamel shaping, bonding, braces, and gum contouring are other successful treatments that can be used to help your teeth look their best.

I’m Dr. Michael Bjornbak, a trusted and experienced Sherman Oaks dentist. If you are looking for quality dental care in the Van Nuys, Studio City CA, or Sherman Oaks area, I hope you’ll give us a call at 818-465-9704 to schedule a consultation.

We offer dental implants, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, and dentures.

The Sherman Oaks Dental Guide To Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom Teeth And Your Sherman Oaks Dentist Wisdom teeth are the last of the molars (grinding teeth) to erupt from the gum. They usually appear in the late teens and early twenties. Not all people develop these teeth while some have from one to four.

Though some Sherman Oaks dental patients never experience any problems with these extra molars, many times wisdom teeth can create serious dental complications. If the wisdom teeth do not have the room to develop and erupt normally, they are referred to as impacted wisdom teeth. An impacted tooth may never emerge from the bone and gum, emerge only partially, or come in sideways.

Impacted teeth can damage the adjacent molar, cause infection or trigger gum disease. Sometimes these problems cause no noticeable symptoms for a period of time. To prevent these serious complications, wisdom teeth are often removed.

Wisdom teeth symptoms include pain when opening mouth, gum swelling, bad breath, and pain when chewing. These indicators can be constant or intermittent.

To learn more about wisdom teeth extraction, call 818-465-9704 to schedule an exam at Sherman Oaks Dental. Our compassionate dental team can recommend the best course of treatment.

Beautiful Teeth Without Breaking The Bank

affordable teeth whitening Sherman Oaks

At Sherman Oaks Dental in Sherman Oaks, our smile makeover patients believe that life-changing cosmetic dentistry is a worthwhile investment. Indeed, for most people, the value of a healthy, attractive smile cannot be measured in dollars. We agree, however, that cosmetic dentistry is not cheap.

Do you have to spend thousands of dollars to upgrade your smile? Actually, no. Today’s post focuses on the most affordable cosmetic dental procedures.

Dental Bonding
In many cases, dental bonding can be used to fix a tooth that has been chipped.

When Michael Bjornbak repairs a tooth with dental bonding, a pliable resin material is applied to the tooth. Dr. Bjornbak expertly molds the material to create the desired shape. The resin is then hardened using a special light. After hardening, Dr. Bjornbak performs any necessary trimming and shaping followed by a final polishing.

Dental bonding is typically less costly than porcelain veneers or dental crowns. Call us at 818-465-9704 to discuss cosmetic dental financing options.

Beware of brand-new Sherman Oaks area practices that advertise extremely low prices for dental bonding, veneers, or dental implants. The proficiency and artistic ability necessary to realize minuscule tolerances should not be undertaken by a beginner. Thoroughly research any new cosmetic dentist you are considering for any cosmetic dental procedures or complete cosmetic dental smile makeover.

Tooth Whitening
Most Sherman Oaks people are aware that there are several different tooth whitening protocols. Michael Bjornbak recommends scheduling a tooth whitening consultation to discuss your options. Even inexpensive OTC tooth bleaching systems can be misused and result in tooth sensitivity, damage to tooth enamel, and spotty coloration.

Regarding the cost of teeth whitening: if you select an at-home system from a drugstore, you may have to buy several packages to attain even slight whitening. In-office whitening or a take home system from our office may be more reasonably-priced in the long run.

Is Your Mouth Sore Something Serious?

dental fear Los AngelesAs your local Sherman Oaks dentist, one of my roles is to help you take care of your mouth. Some of my patients have problems with mouth sores, thus the topic of today’s post.

If you live in the Sherman Oaks area and have a mouth sore that lasts more than a week or two, it is vital to come in for an exam. Mouth sores can be an indicator of disease, and an early assessment helps with preventing more serious troubles. If necessary, important treatment and pain relief can be offered. In extreme cases, I will refer you to a medical professional in the Sherman Oaks area who specializes in diseases that can cause mouth sores.

There are two types of mouth sores that are common in the Sherman Oaks area: canker sores and cold sores.

Canker sores are small, ulcer-like sores with a white or gray base and a red border. They are found on the inside of the mouth and while they are not contagious, they can be painful. Typically a canker sore heals in a week or two. Antimicrobial mouth-rinses, over-the-counter topical anesthetics, and avoiding spicy and acidic foods assist in temporary relief while your sore is healing.

The cause of canker sores is not certain. Possible explanations include a cut on the inside of the mouth, a reaction to extreme temperatures, acids from food or drink, fatigue, stress, and allergies. Some studies point to bacteria or a virus, or combinations of all these factors.

Cold sores, also called fever blisters or Herpes Simplex, are groups of fluid-filled blisters that appear around the lips, sometimes appearing under the nose or around the chin. Cold sores are contagious and painful, but they usually heal in about a week. Some over-the-counter anesthetics provide relief.

There are innovative antiviral drugs on the market that have shown promise in reducing outbreaks, but there is currently no known cure. The initial infection, known as primary herpes, often occurs before adulthood. Once the virus infects you, it may stay in your body and remain inactive or cause occasional cold sore outbreaks. Outbreaks may be triggered by a fever, sunburn, skin abrasions, stress, or exposure to extremes in temperature.

In some cases, a change in the way you care for your mouth reduces the frequency of mouth sores. If you are in the Sherman Oaks area and would like to talk to a dental professional about mouth sores, give us a call at Sherman Oaks Dental to schedule an examination.

7 Ways To Fix A Tooth

fix broken tooth Sherman Oaks

In a perfect world, each of your priceless teeth would stay healthy, strong, and brilliantly white throughout your life. The truth is, however, that most California men and women will need to restore a tooth at some point.

A tooth can be compromised by tooth decay, enamel erosion, a chip or crack, gum disease, or injury. Sometimes old restorations break and need to be replaced or root canals performed decades ago develop an abscess.

Here are 7 different options for repairing a damaged tooth:

Dental Bonding
Bonding, officially called direct composite veneers, is used to correct minor cosmetic troubles – small chips, cracks, discoloration, and spaces between teeth. A skilled cosmetic dentist applies moldable tooth-colored composite resin and shapes as desired. The resin is then cured with a special light to harden and adhere tightly to the tooth. Composite bonding is frequently the most cost-effective option for improving healthy teeth with minor cosmetic issues.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin tooth-shaped fronts that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth. They are used when the underlying tooth is structurally sound and free of tooth decay. A beautiful veneer can cover a chip or crack or fix the alignment of a tooth that appears slightly off kilter as compared to surrounding teeth.

Fillings
Modern white fillings are strong and inconspicuous. A minimally invasive filling at Sherman Oaks Dental leaves you with more of nature’s ideal dental material — your own enamel and dentin. We can also replace old amalgam fillings with white fillings. This makes your teeth look a lot better every time you open your mouth. Get rid of all that metal!

Inlays and Onlays
A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are produced in a dental lab, they are usually called indirect fillings. A less invasive inlay or onlay may be used instead of a traditional filling or, in some cases, a crown. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are typically smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

Crowns
A crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, durability, and function. A crown is ordinarily necessary for a tooth that has had a root canal, a tooth with extreme decay, or as the replacement tooth in a dental bridge. Attaching a crown to the abutment is the final step of a tooth implant procedure. Crowns can be made of all metal (such as gold), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all ceramic, or all resin.

Soft Tissue Grafts
Gum recession puts teeth and underlying bone at risk. Soft tissue grafting can cover the exposed root of a tooth to impede further damage. Gum surgery is also executed for cosmetic reasons such reshaping a gumline to eliminate a “gummy” smile.

Dental Implants
What if a tooth has to be extracted because it is beyond saving? For many Sherman Oaks Dental patients, a dental implant anchored into the bone is the prime solution. A tooth implant consist of a strong metal post (artificial root), abutment (connecting piece), and beautiful crown. A dental implant had many advantages over a dental bridge. They are stronger, provide virtually natural function, prohibit bone recession, and do not influence the surrounding teeth. For patients with multiple missing teeth, individually-constructed implant-anchored dentures can be designed in any configuration necessary.

For more specifics about any of these procedures, call Sherman Oaks Dental at 818-465-9704. Thanks for visiting the Sherman Oaks Dental blog. We appreciate your interest in our Sherman Oaks dental practice.

Sherman Oaks Pediatric and Cosmetic Dentistry

At Sherman Oaks Dental in Sherman Oaks, we promote preventative dental care by developing decay prevention plans and helping our patients establish and preserve proper dental practices. If today’s Sherman Oaks kids can avoid dental caries, it will benefit them more than you may realize.

1) A healthy mouth equals better overall health and well-being.
Maintaining prime oral health puts children at a lower risk for diabetes and heart disease.

2) A beautiful, healthy smile boosts confidence and self-esteem for children.

3) By keeping teeth and gums healthy as youth, you avoid the need for expensive restorative dental work down the road.
