Tooth Extractions With Your Sherman Oaks Dentistry
It’s understandable that most people would prefer to keep their natural teeth for their entire life. However, it is sometimes necessary to have teeth pulled in adulthood. Having one of your teeth pulled may be necessary if the tooth becomes damaged or decayed and cannot be repaired. There is also the risk that a tooth may acquire a serious infection and impact other areas of the mouth. Some patients may have overcrowding in their mouth and lack the space necessary to fit all of their adult teeth. Tooth removal may be necessary to allow the other teeth enough room to align properly. At Sherman Oaks Dentistry, Dr. Bjornbak will provide you with expert care regarding your tooth extraction.
What You Can Expect With A Tooth Removal
If you need an extraction, Dr. Bjornbak will first numb the area to lessen any discomfort. After the extraction, Dr. Bjornbak will advise you of what post extraction regimen to follow. Following the tooth extraction, a small amount of bleeding is normal. Your mouth will slowly fill in the bone where the tooth root was through the formation of a blood clot.
Here are some tips to follow to make recovery easier:
- Avoid anything that might prevent normal healing.
- Don’t smoke or rinse your mouth vigorously.
- Avoid drinking through a straw for 24 hours.
- Follow the diet your dentist suggests.
During the first few days after the extraction, rinse your mouth gently. You can apply an ice bag if you are experiencing swelling and call Dr. Bjornbak right away if the swelling does not go away. You can brush and floss the other teeth as usual but don’t clean the teeth next to where the tooth was removed. When having an extraction, today’s modern procedures and follow up care, as recommended by your dentist, are there for your benefit and comfort.
